Vol. 3 - Story 10 - Dark Memory
Translated by nenilein
Author: Kanemaki Tomoe
Original Plan: Nomura Tetsuya
4 Years Ago….. Ventus …..These are things that happened not far off the Keyblade Graveyard.Ventus was surrounded by Heartless.I’m scared.“Please stop it, Master! I’m not strong enough!” Ventus cried out in fear, holding on to the Keyblade in his hand. He was under the watchful eyes of Master Xehanort, who was standing on a cliff above him. It’s impossible. I can’t win.The Heartless drew closer to Ventus. Dark stains seemed to appear on the ground and from them several new Heartless began to emerge. Why do I have to do this when it’s so obvious that I can’t do it?The hand he was holding his Keyblade with was damp already, that’s how heavily he was sweating in his fear.“No, it is because you are trying to hold it in. Let the dark impulses waken in the pit of your heart. Release them, here and now! Sharpen your fear into rage! You must!” Xehanort yelled at Ventus.I don’t get what you want from me. I just can’t do it.I can’t “sharpen my fear into rage”. I’m just scared, that’s it.“If you do not let the storm within you run its course, it will wipe you from the face of the world, make no mistake! Do it! Embrace the darkness! Produce for your master the Χ-Blade!”There’s no way I can win. It’s impossible.A Heartless leapt at Ventus. Just barely Ventus managed to fend the strike off. But it looked like this was only the beginning, as suddenly all of the Heartless began to attack Ventus at once. Like a huge, black mass, the Heartless threw themselves onto Ventus and clung to him, causing his form to be swallowed underneath the crowd of them.I’m giving up. It’s hopeless.“Ventus!” Xehanort yelled, jumping down from his cliff and summoning his Keyblade. With it, he struck down and vanquished one of the Heartless. The Heartless, understanding that not Ventus, but Xehanort was the greater danger for them, immediately left off the boy to crowd around Xehanort instead. Ventus, however, had already lost consciousness and now collapsed onto the floor with a dull sound. As his eyes closed, Xehanort proceeded to strike down the Heartless. Once he had defeated the entire crowd of them, Xehanort stepped up to Ventus.“Really? You would rather die than use the power? Feckless neophyte.”Carelessly, Xehanort kicked Ventus and rolled him over, causing him to face up. And then, staring at the boy in thought for just a moment, Xehanort seemed to have come to a decision and he summoned his Keyblade a second time, to thrust it right into Ventus’ chest. A bright light began to shoot out from the wound and Ventus’ eyes snapped open.
“If I must… I will extract the darkness from within you myself.”
….. Vanitas …..Something pitch-black rose from within the light of Ventus’ chest. It formed into a sphere, like an egg, and within his egg, something began to take shape. A young boy, clad in black and wearing a mask, appeared. And as this happened, all light faded from Ventus’ eyes. The masked boy slowly began to stretch out his limbs and descend onto the ground. He looked at Xehanort. He didn’t know what kind of person that man before him was. Nor what it was that was laying there on the ground with stretched out limbs. But it made me a little bit sad.Why am I sad?“Empty creature from Ventus’ riven… to you, the name Vanitas shall be given.”“Yes, Master.”When the masked boy, Vanitas, answered like this, Xehanort laughed,“Well then… I shall take my leave now.”“Where are you going?”“To take Ventus to where he can sleep forever. I will be back soon. Do as you please in the meantime.”Xehanort picked up the motionless Ventus, carried him and left like this. A strong wind blew across the area. Absent-minded, Vanitas stared at the ground. Then, he looked up at the dreary, dull sky. Motionless, he stared at his hand, until he clenched it into a firm fist. Yet another large key appeared in his hand. Realizing that this was his power, that he could make use of, Vanitas laughed underneath his mask.I’m scared.A sudden, fleeting emotion overcame Vanitas and he had to close his eyes. It came from Ventus’ heart. But it’s also my own emotion. And from this fear I don’t understand, terrible strength can be born.Wasn’t that just what Xehanort had said? That by sharpening fear into rage, he could gain power? But then again, what was born from his emotions right now, was different and something very special. Why was I born? And why do I suddenly know all these things, if I was just born?I’m a heart of Darkness. A vessel of negative emotions. From Vanitas’ body, a dark being emerged and rose. Vanitas silently looked at it. It was a shadow-like creature, like a monster, with two red, shining eyes.“It’s “unversed”… An Unversed.”When Vanitas reached his hand out of the being, it playfully spun in a circle around him with pleasure. This was manifest emotion. Very much unversed in its existence as a living being. No… maybe you couldn’t even call it “a living being”. After all, even if you said that it had “life”, it was just made of a fragment of my own life.Vanitas brought his Keyblade down onto the Unversed and it died just as suddenly has it had been born. It’s disgusting.Thinking this, Vanitas felt a horrible pain in his chest. This must be the shards of the vanished Unversed’s emotion. Vanitas stared at his hand’s palm, then tightly clenched it into a fist.I’m lonely. And behind Vanitas’ back, again, an Unversed was born. The wind kept blowing across the badlands. In the distance, the evening sun was sinking. Twilight was dyeing the sky and from now, it would proceed to change more and more from day to the darkness of night.Who was I?Vanitas felt like he was choking, his chest was heavy and he sunk into his knees. Yet more Unversed were born from his body.It hurts.Overcome by the pain, Vanitas threw away his mask. What he found inside was no different from the faces of the Unversed, pitch-black and with two red eyes, resembling that of a doll more than that of a human. Vanitas’ expression on his doll-like face wrapped into agony and bitterness.Hey, where am I?Hearing a voice out of nowhere suddenly, Vanitas felt his vision go black. He was surrounded by Darkness and couldn’t see anything. In the midst of this Darkness, just a single streak of light stretched out.Just what is happening? And then he didn’t understand anything anymore. He felt as if he was hearing a voice from somewhere, as if the wind was carrying it. No, wait, were those waves? Was this the tide he heard there? In the distance, he could see a light. The radiance drew closer and finally engulfed him. It’s time to wake up now —– All we have to do is open the door.Hearing this unfamiliar voice, Vanitas opened his eyes, as if he was awakening from a nightmare. He only knew that something had happened. Something relieving, no, something very strange and special, even. Could it be that Ventus, who was supposed to have lost his heart and faded away by now, had recovered his heart…?Why? Who had saved Ventus? Who?Maybe, just maybe, it could have been someone like me, a newborn heart, different from Ventus’ own. This is a wasteland. I can only hear the wind. There’s no waves here.Vanitas shook his head, then he realized a strange feeling. He touched his lips.It felt like just that moment, the world had changed for me. The world… no, me too… is it actually Ventus who changed? When Vanitas stood up, he realized that his face no longer resembled an Unversed, but had become human, that of a normal boy. A boy… and yes, 15 years from now, a boy with a face all too similar to this one, would be called a hero of Light by the people. But this was a journey that wouldn’t yet begin. My way instead led into the depths of the deepest Darkness.Vanitas smirked with the boy’s face and laughed a bit. Around the time the dawn broke, Xehanort returned to the badlands with Ventus. The light of the rising sun was all around Ventus as he walked, but he was staring into the distance, absentmindedly.“What? You brought him back?”Vanitas smiled, as he got up from the ground where he had been resting to look Ventus in the eyes. The moment their eyes met, Ventus stepped back in fear and he cowered.“Why’d you do that?”Kicked by Vanitas, Ventus groaned and tumbled to the ground. Even though he should have recovered his heart, his state was just as pathetic as it had been before. Vanitas looked down onto him, as Ventus curled up on the floor, moaning.I hate you.I found Ventus detestable. But I didn’t know why.And as he still felt this, a new Unversed was born from Vanitas’ body.“Ohhh! What would this be?” Xehanort asked, looking at the Unversed.“An Unversed. A monster born from the fragments of my emotions.”“Wonderful.”He didn’t know what was supposed to be “wonderful” about it.I’m irritated.“Don’t do anything reckless, Vanitas.” Xehanort stepped up to Vanitas to help him up, glaring at him. There was a faint glow in the old man’s eyes.“Reckless? Oh, please. He’s me. I thought it was the Unversed you found so “wonderful”. Why didn’t you just let him sleep?”“The situation has changed. It seems like Ventus wasn’t as frail as I believed him to be.”“He’s pathetic,” Vanitas spat out. It seemed like Xehanort wasn’t aware that Ventus had been saved by an outside force, that somebody had filled the void in Ventus’ heart. But Xehanort had just gone and concluded that Ventus wasn’t weak. And that upset me.I didn’t get it. He was my own other half. How come I couldn’t help but hate him so much?“He’s gonna be a nuisance. I should put an end to him,” Vanitas said and summoned his Keyblade.“Wait. I have no idea what will happen to you if you destroy him now.”“So what? You sure can’t keep him around me. I can’t promise you that I won’t just end him someday if you do that.”The Keyblade resting in his hand, Vanitas stared at Ventus bitterly.“In that case, I know just the right place for him.”“You’re taking him somewhere again? You really seem to care for that guy, huh?” Vanitas laughed.“I need both you and Ventus alive for my current plans.”“Plans, huh?”Finally complying with the prohibition, Vanitas put away his keyblade and looked at Xehanort. I didn’t care how Xehanort intended to benefit from using us in his plan. Ventus’ memories left within me told me that Ventus had always greatly respected Xehanort as his Master. But I felt differently about him.“Do what you want, Master,” Vanitas declared and turned his back at both, Xehanort and Ventus, starting to walk away.“Where are you going?”“To get some relief. I can’t get that in this world.”And right behind Vanitas, looking like they were companions to him, the Unversed followed. How could I ease my irritation? And why was I born?Vanitas clenched his teeth and frowned.Would I ever find the answers to my questions? CONTINUED ON THE SECOND COLUMN.

….. Xehanort …..To give Ventus, whose heart had shattered, peaceful rest, I brought him to my former home, the beach from which I once decided to leave on a journey, Destiny Island.I don’t know why I immediately thought of this place. I hadn’t returned there even once since I had left, yet nothing had changed, not even the sound of the waves.A world, where only the sound of the waves breaks the silence. In a place like this, I thought, Ventus would be able to rest in peace. But the sleeping Ventus, who I had believed would never open his eyes again, stretched his hand out to the sky and called his Keyblade forth. Now it was possible for me to create the Χ-Blade by raising both Ventus’ heart of Light and Vanitas’ heart of Darkness to strength and then let them intersect in battle. But as soon as I returned to the Badlands and brought him to face with Vanitas, Ventus once more lost consciousness. It seems that Vanitas’ Darkness is too strong for Ventus to endure being raised in the same place as him yet. This was a problem I couldn’t quite solve yet.I would have to let Ventus be raised in a different place. There was only one place adequate to raise the heart of Light, and this is under the watch of my former friend and Keyblade Master, Eraqus, who believes Light to be the absolute.….. Eraqus …..This was when Xehanort brought Ventus to the place where he used to be studying and training and looked up at the castle that was built there. It was a special place, which had been protected by a long line of Keyblade Masters of many generations. It was here he knew he would find the friend he had studied and shared knowledge with once. This place, too, had not been visited by Xehanort ever since he first left it. He had his reasons. He didn’t even know how many years it had been since he had left his birthplace. He wondered if it might have been intended for him since the very beginning to leave on his journey and meet Ventus. But right now, Ventus still hadn’t completely regained his consciousness yet, even just coming to this place had only been possible for him by blindly abiding to Xehanort’s command.“Let us go,” he told Ventus, and received no answer. Still, he started walking and followed after Xehanort. Xehanort opened the door to the building. Just like he had known that he would be visited, Eraqus was standing on top of the staircase on end of the entrance hall and looked down.“Xehanort…”“It’s been long, Eraqus. There is something I have to ask of you.”“…Then let us go inside to talk.”Hearing Eraqus’ words, Xehanort went inside. Eraqus did the same.“What could it possibly be that you want of me, that it caused you to come here, Xehanort?”Xehanort looked back, across his shoulder and saw a huge scar on his friend’s face. This must be the wound he caused him, back when they parted ways in this very place.“The boy who came here with me… His name is Ventus. I would like to leave him in your care.”“But why? For what reason?”Being asked this, Xehanort shook his head in deep regret.“I made a mistake, Eraqus. In my pursuit for the χ-Blade, I caused great damage to Ventus’ heart in hopes of creating it. He didn’t only lose a portion of his heart, but also his memories due to this. You can’t imagine the pain I felt when I saw what state I had put poor Ventus in. I have grown old. I cannot bear looking at him anymore, knowing what I’ve done.”And pouring out his heart like this, Xehanort took Eraqus’ hands and continued with a sincere face.“This child is my sin. That is why I want to leave him with you, who is so overflowing with Light. The day may come that my Darkness takes control of me once more and my thirst for knowledge about the χ-Blade will cause me to repeat my failure. Eraqus, please listen to the request of an old man. Let this boy live here with you, in your world. I will find another place to live and find atonement.”“Xehanort…”Eraqus’ voice was filled with joy.“I cannot ask this of anyone but you, Eraqus, my friend.”Just as Xehanort said this, a scream reached them from outside. Just what had happened? Xehanort and Eraqus nodded at each other and hurried back to the entrance. Ventus appeared to be in horrible pain. There were two other children – probably Eraqus’ students – with him and they seemed to be anxious and terrified by what was happening.“What did you do?!” Eraqus raised his voice at them. Meanwhile, Xehanort stepped between the children to help Ventus back up. But the boy had already lost consciousness from exhaustion once more, putting him in the same state as after his meeting with Vanitas.“Nothing. I just asked him some stuff!” the older boy, whom Xehanort believed to be Eraqus’ student, said. And there, Xehanort felt it. Just a little bit, but it was enough. Darkness. The boy reminded Xehanort of himself, back when he had still been studying alongside Eraqus. Or maybe he was just thinking too much about it.“Ventus cannot tell you anything because he cannot remember anything,” Eraqus said. “Xehanort, I will grant your request. I will take good care of Ventus.”“My friend – No. My brother. You have my gratitude.”Eraqus stepped in front of Xehanort, carefully picked up Ventus from the ground and stood up.“Terra, please bring our newest student, Ventus, to bed.”“Understood, Master Eraqus.”Eraqus handed Ventus to the boy who was his student, Terra. Terra was gentle when he accepted the younger boy, but there was still uneasiness and worry in his eyes when he did so and he kept looking at Ventus like this.Xehanort could feel that this young man had a desire for power. And such obsession can fuel the birth of Darkness within one’s heart. A person like him could prove to be appropriate for his needs. It seems he wouldn’t have to seek for a new vessel again, since he had now found one, right here. The truth was that Xehanort had originally made Ventus into his pupil in order to use him as a vessel for his heart, so he could exchange his old, frail body for a new one. However, Ventus had proven himself to be too gentle for these ends. In the end, excessive kindness is nothing but another form of weakness after all. That is why Xehanort instead removed the Darkness from Ventus’ heart and separated him into a heart of pure Light and one of pure Darkness. And so, Xehanort had now more than one goal he was striving to fulfill. Firstly, he wanted to defeat the flow of time by gaining a newer, younger shell. And secondly, there was also still the χ-Blade to gain.“I’ll ready the bed for him.”“Thank you, Aqua.”The girl, who also was Eraqus’ student, Aqua, hurried up the stairs. Terra then followed her slowly, carrying Ventus like he was made of precious porcelain. After he was sure that both of them were out of reach, Eraqus looked at Xehanort. Just for a moment, he closed his eyes and touched his scar, seemingly remembering past days. Then he spoke with a smile on his face,“I am so glad the day has come we can meet to talk like this again, Xehanort.”“Yes, I too am glad,” Xehanort replied and slowly began to laugh.….. Vanitas …..‘Has something moved Ventus’ heart just now?’ he wondered and stopped in his tracks. Just the same instant, he felt as if also the usually constant wind blowing across the earth of this world had stopped as well. Vanitas looked up to the sky. Nothing had changed about his situation yet… Just what was Xehanort doing? Just then, the plans Xehanort had been speaking of came to his mind again. Why was I born? Why did he let me be born? Where did Ventus go? Just what is going to become of me now?I’m anxious. As anxiety of his own future overcame Vanitas, another Unversed was born from his body. Alone, looking at this creature, how it moved around awkwardly and flailed made Vanitas feel irritated. And so, more Unversed were born. He felt ridiculous, as if he was looking at his own weakness, flailing on the ground before him. And yet more Unversed came into being. It wouldn’t end. Finally, Vanitas reached the point where he just summoned his keyblade and began bringing it down onto the Unversed. A stinging pain shot through his body when he struck them down. And because of this pain, for every Unversed he killed, two new would appear. And still, Vanitas didn’t stop trying to vanquish them. Why won’t it stop.Just stop it.It hurts.I hate this. All of these emotions and his hurt ran together and were channeled into a huge torrent, and the stronger this wave of emotions become, the more Unversed were born. The more Unversed I strike down, the stronger I become. So that means, I need to hurt myself, destroy my own emotion’s fragments, to become stronger. The more I hurt myself, the stronger I become. And the stronger I become, the stronger become the Unversed I create.I’ll change all my pain, my hatred and my sorrow into power.I’m his left-behind Darkness, what remained here of his heart, and I am in agony. Why am I in agony? Why am I suffering alone, what is he doing right now? Is he still asleep?I’m jealous.A conspicuously large, dark shadow rose from behind Vanitas’ back, becoming a gigantic Unversed. The giant Unversed immediately fled the scene. When Vanitas turned and saw how big the Unversed was, he bit his lip. He closed his eyes, trying to feel the movements of Ventus’ heart one more time. But he couldn’t sense anything. Ventus wasn’t feeling anything. And so there was nothing for Vanitas to sense.I wished I were him, able to feel nothing at all. I was a part of him once, so why was it that I had been split off? Maybe it would have been better if he had stayed close. Maybe I would have felt a bit better. But Xehanort took him away. It’s all Xehanort’s fault. But Ventus doesn’t have to deal with what I have to go through. He doesn’t have to feel this pain, he doesn’t have to feel this agony.I envy you. He’s detestable. I hate Ventus. And the Unversed that keep coming from me are the worst. Just what can I do now? How do I get out of here?It went on like this, day after day. Ventus’ heart just wouldn’t wake up. Vanitas had no other way to occupy himself than by killing Unversed. With each Unversed he killed, he felt pain. For every bit of pain he felt, he began to hate the world – and Ventus – a bit more. And the more he hated, the more Unversed were born.I’m in agony.Killing the Unversed is just another way of hurting myself. Why do I have to suffer like this? Why won’t Ventus wake up?Xehanort did nothing but watch me all day, regardless of my pain. There were times when I couldn’t take it anymore. Then, I just collapsed onto the floor, in the middle of the badlands. I’d lose consciousness. And when I woke up, I would find my cheeks wet. And I would still feel the sorrow and still be lonely. But I didn’t know the reason for my sorrow or for my loneliness. All I knew was how to kill Unversed and that’s what I kept doing.I didn’t know anything else I could do. Maybe I’d not have felt anything either if I had stopped killing the Unversed. But rage was my power. I needed it. And yet, there was also this pain.I kill Unversed. I wound myself. The pain gets agonizing. I fall down. The sand flies up around me.“You really are a wonderful creature… Vanitas,” Xehanort said, as he drew closer to Vanitas, who was on the ground, moaning and flailing.“Wonderful? How exactly?” Vanitas asked, breathing heavily. What could possibly be ‘wonderful’ about me? All I did was produce monsters.Trying to deal with the enormous pain, Vanitas cradled and clung to his own body. It was suffocating him.“Yes. Feel the pain. Let it grow.”As Xehanort turned to leave again after saying this, Vanitas struggled to get back onto his feet.“I… hate… this…” he choked out, facing toward Xehanort.“I hate this. Why am I the only one who has to suffer like this?!”Hearing Vanitas’ words, Xehanort just laughed.“What’s there to laugh about?!”I could think only of the pain, the pain, only the pain and bit my own cheek from inside, to distract myself. That had become a tick of mine by now. I hated that, too.“If it is really so difficult to endure this life for you, then there might be a way to end your suffering that I could tell you about… You just have to become the χ-Blade.”“The…χ-Blade?” Vanitas asked frantically.“You will have to grow stronger before you can do it and the same goes for Ventus. When you two then have reached the same strength and fight like this, the χ-Blade will be forged. And then the χ-Blade will release you… no… the world from all suffering.”I couldn’t care less about the world. But I desperately wanted to be rid of this pain.“That is why you have continue to strengthen both your body and your heart, Vanitas,” Xehanort then turned his back on Vanitas and left with those worlds. So, if I can become the χ-Blade, I would finally be freed of my suffering…That’s a purpose… A goal. A light on the far end of the long, pitch-black tunnel. Why are you still sleeping? And then, far, far away, I could feel how Ventus’ heart moved, just a little bit. Xehanort had said I would be able to merge with Ventus, right? His heart was still sleeping… But, still, something had begun to move. So I had to get moving, too.So we could become the χ-Blade one day.
